The COVID-19 pandemic caused a dramatic and sudden standstill in human patterns of mobility and activity around the world. This drastic reduction and shift in the way humans interact with the environment has been called “the anthropause” due to its unprecedented scale and impacts. The anthropause also presents an unexpected opportunity to examine relationships between humans and nature. We want to know what the anthropause will mean for marine biodiversity, which impacts of large scale lockdowns will be transient, which will persist, and what these outcomes mean for marine biodiversity and conservation policies.
